How to handle overwhelming stress?

How to handle overwh

Stress has become an integral part of modern way of life. Almost everyone is experiencing stress at some points in their lives and it appears that no one is immune to devastating effects of this mental condition on their bodies. In some way, occasional and well controlled stress can positively contribute toward personal growth of any individual who can recognise stress symptoms early and then effectively manage the whole process including effective relaxation at the end of it. This means that personal growth comes with constant stretching of own comfort zone and the price is stress. This is the byproduct of doing something you might not be comfortable, but when accomplished will help you do the same job better next time round.

The above is universally considered as a positive stress. However, the type of stress that is of grave concern is “negative stress”, which is not driven by above criteria, but mainly by your anxious or fearful thoughts. The most common triggers for “negative stress” are:

  • Your belief that you are unable to achieve work related targets
  • Your consistent lateness to work or other important engagements
  • Your excessive worries regarding inability to pay bills
  • Difficult relationships with people who you deem important in your life
  • Your health related worries and other other similar occurrences

There are many different situations that could be used, but the common denominator in all these situations is the is fear of consequences, which might take place if something is not done, whilst you appear to have insufficient control to handle them correctly. This type of stress (most common) is usually linked with irrational fears and anxieties over some things that you think you have no control, whatsoever. In fact, this belief is correct to some degree, because you may not entirely be able to control things that are firmly out of your sphere of influence, such as wether your employer can afford to employ you or your life’s partner is going through tough times and right now chooses to keep you out of her/his life.

However, what you can control is how you handle those emotional challenges that are causing you overwhelming stress. This means that you have innate ability to choose one thought over the other, hence one mental state over the other. The reason why these situations are so stressful (when you believe you’re not in control) is pre conditioned or automated belief that you have no “personal power” to make positive changes. Naturally, this is absolutely false belief that has no ground in reality of life, because we all have the power to influence anything we want in our lives and the question is whether we know how to wield that power correctly. The first thing you must always do to claim your power is to “accept responsibility” or “ownership” for all your actions that have led you to experience those difficult situations. You will do this by actively questioning your predominant beliefs by actively analysing your thoughts, emotions and actions that have led you into those “stressful” situations. Because if you don’t proactively control all your mental activities, you will fall into the trap of “automated” thinking, which will bring forward some old and non resolved emotions linked to some unresolved issues from the past and that will add “further emotional burden” to the current situation. Depending on how many of those unresolved situations are still lingering in your subconscious mind, that much overwhelm you will experience when dealing with the present situation. And interestingly if you do not find solutions to deal with these situations adequately, they will continue to compound your subconscious mind, until you feel completely overwhelmed, helpless and feeling desperately weak and run down mentally. If this is allowed to carry on unquestioned – in time it will lead to various mental health ailments, such as irrational anxiety, neurosis and depression to name the few.

So what is the solution you may ask? Usual recommendations for handling any types of stressful situations are:

  • Aim to lower your expectations and start the process of questioning your dominant thoughts, emotions and actions
  • Ask others to help or assist you in the areas you feel excessive overwhelm and desperation
  • Take responsibility for the situation
  • Engage in problem solving
  • Maintain emotionally supportive relationships
  • Maintain emotional composure or alternatively express distressing emotions etc

There are of course many other strategies you can use, but what you need is the foundation that will keep the structure of your sound mental and physical health standing no matter what. That foundation is called “energy rebalance of your body” and “effective control of your mental faculties”. These two key factors must be mastered before attempting to “see” things, as they are, as oppose to what you have conditioned yourself to “see” and react to when you are in fearful states and which are still governing your inner world of thoughts and emotions.

Now, let’s talk a little bit more about these two important corner stones of your mental health. Energy is everything and when you’re energised – you’re healthy, vibrant, happy and totally focused on the moment. This means that your bio-energy field is optimally charged resulting in “homeostasis” or the state of perfectly balanced mental and physical health and wellbeing. When in this state, constant mental pressures are easily absorbed and dealt with without lasting consequences. The problems occur if you continue to hold accrued “negative energy” without regularly releasing that type of energy from your “bio-energy” field. In such cases, already accrued negative energy coupled with consistent repetition of various forms of mental and physical tensions will over time cause enormous pressures on your bio-energy field resulting in serious reduction of energy flow from within. Initially, you will experience this as tiredness, lethargy, inability to sleep with low mental concentration and even reduced desire to eat and perform other key biological functions. If this situation continues unopposed, it will then develop into various mental and physical dysfunctions and so it is detrimental to develop the ability to become sensitive to your own bio-energy levels.

In addition to this, you must also learn to observe your thoughts and emotions by being able to timely detect dysfunctional thinking and emotions in situations in which they are not needed or not relevant. You will achieve this by learning to effectively calm your body and mind at will resulting in you being able to effectively control your emotional exertions. When you learn how to implement these two techniques – you will gain much better control over your cognitive and emotional faculties and in turn they will help you to implement other more powerful cognitive correction strategies, which will empower you to effortlessly deal with overwhelming and stressful situations.
