How to heal insomnia naturally and without medications?

#How to heal insomnia naturally and without medications?

Regular good night sleep is an absolute must for your health and wellbeing. Particularly, when you start to experience difficulty falling asleep at night and when that trend continues unabated for weeks, that’s a solid sign of emerging insomnia. Insomnia is a sleep disorder that makes it harder for you to fall asleep or stay asleep. Prolonged effects of impaired sleep patterns can have serious impacts on your mental concentration, moods and ability to make rational decisions. It can also lead to dysfunctions, such as: obesity, diabetes, stress, anxiety, depression and even heart disease.

Sleep is absolutely detrimental for your overall health and well-being and therefore you must be vigilant at all times about your sleep patterns and the quality of your sleep. This applies even if you have no issues falling asleep right now, because prevention is always better than curing insomnia and so you could choose some of preventative actions stated below:

  • Create a good sleep routine and stick with it as rigidly as you can.
  • Stay active during the day so you can make your body naturally tired and craving rest and sleep.
  • Regularly check your prescriptions and their effects on your body, whilst always paying attention, if they might interfere with your sleep pattern and/or prevent you to fall asleep naturally.
  • Avoid napping during the day.
  • Avoid or seriously limit the intake of caffeine during the day.
  • Avoid at all costs large meals and in particular do not eat or drink anything couple hours before you go to bed.
  • Take melatonin pills and drink mint and valerian supplements.

There are of course many other useful tips to treat insomnia and you should do your own research, as to what might work best for you. However in this article, we would like to draw your attention to different techniques, which you could use in addition to what is already available out there.

In that respect, the first point you should know about insomnia is it can be caused by some “unusual” habitual behaviour/s, which might have contributed to distorted production of melatonin in and around times, preceding your usual sleep time. The most common occurrences are:

  • Working night shifts
  • Too many late nights (going to bed after midnight)
  • Excessive alcohol and coffee drinking, particularly after 8pm
  • Excessive intellectual and other highly demanding cognitive work, which might have triggered unusually high mental exertion that is not appropriate for that time of the night.
  • Other non work related causes that are more related to your highly charged emotional states, such as irrational worry, anxiety and intrusive thoughts sit right at the top of that list.

All these traits are important to note, because they’re causing your endocrine system (hormonal glands) to work excessively hard and at times when they were meant to rest, hence allowing your pineal gland to produce melatonin for the purpose of enabling you to fall asleep. As such, you must become aware of all your mental and physical activities two to three hours before going to sleep.

In order to start this process, you must always carefully observe your thought patterns, until you become proficient in terms of understanding what you habitually think in the evening or at times before you go to bed. In this way, you will begin to create some understanding of what is causing you not to fall asleep or what might cause you in the future not to fall asleep. Effective understanding of your thoughts is always your best starting point and when you master this trait, you can then proceed to observing you predominant emotional states.

Your thoughts and emotions are totally interlinked and the best way to understand your emotional dysfunctions is to become aware of your predominant thoughts. Your emotions will definitely prevent you from sleeping, but in order for you to deal with your emotions – you must first recognise what initiates them and for that reason you must become an expert in early identification of your predominant thought patterns. In this way you will start to heal insomnia naturally and without medications.

So what do you need to do?

When you successfully identify your predominant thoughts and emotions, you must then understand as to what they are trying to tell you (but before you do that, please ensure you do not interrupt your sleep patterns) and then decide what you must do to effectively resolve these problems. The best way to start this process is to acknowledge these problems and mentally say to yourself that you are in control of your life and that you will resolve whatever it is that is bothering your subconsciously. You will do this by writing these problems down on the piece of paper in order to allow them to dwindle away from your conscious awareness. In this way, you will send a message to your subconscious mind that you are in control. You can now go to sleep knowing that you will deal with this problem given first opportunity.

The next step is to choose the right time and it’s best done when you are fully awake and not nearing your bed time. You should always start by calming your mind and body first, through the works of deep abdominal breathing and to the point in where you will achieve complete mental stillness. At that point, you will solely notice your thoughts and will only follow your thoughts, but you will not emotionally engage (energise) them. You will only observe them, as a neutral or third person.

When you master this part by emotionally not engaging with your thoughts – you will then start to observe the emotions that usually follow the most dominant thoughts. These emotions are linked with these thoughts depending on how you have conditioned yourself to emotionally react to certain external triggers, such as: things, people and events. The main reason as to why you must stay “neutral” is because your emotions are chemically replicated by your endocrine system (hormonal system) and then remembered by your body cells. So every time you experience same or similar things, people and events will automatically draw relevant thoughts, energised by the very same “memorised” emotions. It is for this reason that lot of people find it extremely hard to fight off negative emotions ,when faced with certain familiar situations. But in this case, you must learn to become “neutral” and you will do it by diligently writing down thoughts and relevant emotions you are able to detect during the process of your observations.

In doing above, you will achieve two things: firstly you will reduce your predominant brainwave activity, which will help you stabilise the workings of your endocrine system and in time will enable the proper production of melatonin at night times. The second point is that you will have good visibility of specific thoughts and emotions you will need to resolve in order to correct your current mental instability. When you master these two traits, you will have a great starting point to start working on your sub cellular energetic cleaning, which is an absolute must in the process of creation of homeostasis or complete self regulation. As this is a way more complex approach, we shall not go into details of your energetic cleaning and rebalancing at this stage, but it is absolutely important part of living a healthy and balanced life.
